Equal Voice GTA Mixer

Wednesday January 13, 2010

EV invites members and supporters to come out for fun, sisterhood, talk, wine, nibbles, and an opportunity to shape the future of Electing Women in Toronto.*

You are invited to be part of a serious re-think—almost a decade after Equal Voice first started calling for the election of more women to all levels of government in Canada, progressis being made but remains very slow.

Details

Date: Wednesday, January 13
Time: 7:00-9:00
Location: Women's Art Association (23 Prince Arthur Ave, just West of Avenue Road, close to the St. George subway station, Paid  Parking lot on Bedford.)
What: Drinks, snacks, good company, silent auction
RSVP : velma007@rogers.com  We’d like some sense of numbers coming, but come anyway if you forget to RSVP.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from Olivia Chow, former municipal councillor and current federal Member of Parliament, on why we need more female politicians.

Potential Re-organizing of the Toronto EV groups

EV is a national organization with chapters across the country.  In Toronto, we have three chapters, sometimes stumbling over one another.

They are:

- The Founders’ Chapter, which was the original steering committee of Equal Voice. By invitation only, the Chapter long supplied much of the national impetus

- The Toronto Chapter, designed to attract a young and diverse group of women willing to push for the election of more Toronto women, federally, provincially and  particularly on Toronto City Council

- And the Toronto Youth Chapter, the first and most active of our national  youth chapters (you may have seen these young women pulling the youth vote in their bright pink T-shirts on election days).

Why this Mixer?

We are kicking off  the New Year by meeting each other and generating some ideas on how to mobilize all of the great EV energy in the region.   We will discuss putting those three Chapters together.

But, this is about much more than structure.  We want to pool our brain power. How do we grab the attention of political leaders and convince them the status quo—less than one-quarter of the seats  in Parliament, legislatures and city councils—just doesn’t cut it in the second decade of the 21st Century?

We would be delighted if you would join us.

Please feel free to bring friends even if they are not EV members...we'll have membership forms there.

*Note:  While this message is being sent to all of our Ontario members, it is primarily meant for  EV members and friends  in the Greater Toronto Area.  This said, if you happen to be in the city on the date of this event, please feel free to attend.

Thank you,

Beki Scott
Vice Chair, Equal Voice

Equal Voice Meets Girl Guides in Ottawa

On February 23, 2009

On February 23, 2009 former National Chair, Raylene Lang-Dion and EV Facebook intern, Dee Dooley, spoke with the 25th Girl Guides in Ottawa.

The Guides, led by their outstanding award winning leader Sarah Govan, asked Equal Voice to come and speak about the importance of politics and political life. Equal Voice was thrilled as we are dedicated to recruiting future politicians and the Girl Guides is a great place to begin!

These young women were more than enthusiastic; they demonstrated wonderful knowledgeable about politics and articulated clear priorities which they plan to address as future elected officials. They spoke with Equal Voice about political campaigns and the girls spent some time making their own election posters. EV was impressed!

As Equal Voice has partnered with the Girl Guides of Canada on our Experiences program, we expect to have even more opportunities in the future to work together.
